Back pain is a leading cause of work absence and disability, affecting 80% of us at some point in our lives. At the NY Center for Integrative Health, there is relief through non-addictive medications, nutraceuticals, and other pain management techniques. Acupuncture may be a stand-alone treatment or combined with electrical stimulation, mind-body medicine, lifestyle counseling, cupping, Tui Na, and other therapies and services available at our NYC office in Manhattan.
The American College of Physicians recommends this traditional Chinese medicine practice as a first-line treatment for chronic back pain due to its safety, low risk of complications, and high success rate in significantly reducing pain and improving function and mobility.
Acupuncture involves inserting fine and sterile needles into specific, mapped “acupoints.” There are thousands of such points on the body. Acupoints are often located within depressions in muscles, bones, and joints along meridians, which are pathways of concentrated energy flow. Target areas for lower back pain include the hips, hands, feet, and the backs of the knees, whereas common acupoints for the upper back focus on the shoulders and neck. By applying needles to stimulate these spots, our providers can alleviate pain and support healing. For back pain, acupuncture:
In studies, acupuncture is associated with sustained, long-term pain relief. When performed by qualified professionals like our team at NY Center for Integrative Health, acupuncture has a very favorable safety profile with a low risk of adverse side effects and complications. It is an invaluable therapy for individuals who want to reduce their reliance on pain relief medications, and for those who are concerned about the side effects and addiction risks associated with drugs like opioids. By stimulating the central nervous system, acupuncture provides a natural alternative to conventional pain management in a bottle. The needles themselves are whisker-thin and flexible, so this treatment is a non-invasive alternative and appropriate for individuals with needle anxiety. In fact, most patients only experience slight tingling, pressure, and warmth (or nothing at all). Often, patients fall asleep as the experience is so calming. Just 30-40 minutes of treatment leaves patients feeling refreshed and like they had two or three hours of sound rest!
No two treatments are exactly the same, because we provide highly personalized care. That care is based on a complete understanding of your needs, derived from a series of assessments. These assessments may include a review of your medical history, lab work, and physical examinations, such as pulse and tongue diagnoses. The latter diagnostics involve observing qualities like the depth and speed of the pulse and color, shape, and coating of the tongue. These findings can tell us a great deal about chronic issues, energy imbalances, inflammation, and other health indicators. With an understanding of your needs, we know exactly where to place each needle. During each session, a series of needles is inserted into these carefully-selected points and at various depths. As appropriate, treatment may include the application of heat, mild electrical impulses, or other complementary therapies to increase the effectiveness of treatment.
It is possible to feel better after a single treatment; however, for most patients, we recommend a series of 6-10 treatments for optimal pain relief. These treatments may be done once a week. We monitor how your body responds to treatment and adjust plans accordingly based on improvements in function and the severity and frequency of your pain.
You may be! Due to its safety, non-invasive nature, and effectiveness, acupuncture has significantly improved many patients’ lives. It is especially helpful for individuals with persistent back pain that has not improved with standard treatments, such as conventional medications or physical therapy. It is also recommended for older adults due to its minimal risks. Individuals with nerve issues or musculoskeletal conditions alike can benefit.
