Immune System Health

What are the signs of a strong immune system, and how can I improve mine?

At the New York Center for Integrative Health, we advise patients in the New York, New York area to live healthy, active lifestyles to maintain a strong and functional immune system. But how do you know when your immune system is robust and when it needs help with improvement? Let’s take a closer look at the immune system!

What are the signs of a strong immune system?

  • Quick recovery. A strong immune system allows the body to bounce back from illnesses and infections quickly. This means that you are less likely to experience prolonged symptoms or complications.
  • High energy levels. When your immune system functions well, you will have more energy and feel less tired. This is because a strong immune system helps combat viruses and bacteria that can cause fatigue.
  • Infrequent illnesses. Individuals with a robust immune system experience fewer illnesses, such as colds, flu, and other infections. This is due to the body’s ability to fight off pathogens efficiently.
  • Fewer or no allergies. A robust immune system also helps to prevent allergies, as it can identify and eliminate allergens before they cause a reaction.

How can I improve my immune system?

  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet. A nutritious diet high in nutrients, vitamins, and necessary minerals helps support the immune system. Include plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, fruits, and whole grains in your meals.
  • Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep weakens the immune system, so getting at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night is essential.
  • Exercise regularly. Physical activity daily not only maintains a healthy weight for a patient but boosts your immune system. This is caused by the increased blood flow and circulation.
  • Reduce stress levels. High levels of stress have the chance to suppress the immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses. Engage in relaxing activities such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing to relax and reduce stress.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water daily flushes out toxins from your body and essentially keeps your immune system functioning at its best.
  • Avoid unhealthy habits. Smoking, excessive and daily alcohol consumption, and a poor diet can weaken the immune system over time.
