Depression and Anxiety

We Treat Depression with the Seriousness and the Comprehensive Approach it Deserves

As a holistic practice, the New York Center for Integrative Health would not be doing its job if we just focused on systemic health and the well-being of the physical body. Led by accomplished naturopathic and functional medicine doctor Dr. Robert Kachko, our center in Manhattan and Stamford, CT knows that physical health is just one part of the complex whole that contributes to an overall state of health and wellness. Depression, anxiety, and other mental and emotional conditions can negatively affect the health of our entire “system.” Physical illnesses, too, may have a tremendous negative effect on our mood. Treatment must start by understanding the true nature of your depression, at its sources, due to the many linkages between mind and body.

More Than “The Blues”

Clinical depression, or major depressive disorder, is characterized by several symptoms that persist for at least two weeks. These symptoms include:

  • Depressed moods most days, and for most of each day
  • Significant loss of interest or pleasure in all or most activities on most days
  • Loss of appetite or marked increase in hunger; accordingly, may notice weight loss or gain
  • Others notice your slowed thoughts or sluggish movements
  • Chronic low energy
  • Feeling worthless
  • Severe sense of guilt
  • Poor concentration
  • Recurrent suicidal thinking

The severe nature of depression demands prompt and appropriate care. This condition can affect every aspect of our lives and is associated with substance abuse, diabetes, heart disease, relationship problems, poor academic and work performance, physical pain, social isolation, and suicide completion.

Treating the Cause(s)

As with all conditions and patient engagements, we consider and assess the whole person. Dr. Kachko starts by thoroughly reviewing your medical history. He further conducts an extensive evaluation, which may begin with comprehensive bloodwork. Due to our onsite capabilities, we can order additional tests to get to the bottom of your distress and associated conditions and factors.

It is essential to understand that depression and other mental conditions are often the sum of many factors. These include hormonal imbalances, your unique brain chemistry and biology, unresolved trauma, and poorly-managed stress. Individuals also risk developing major depressive disorder with chronic systemic conditions and pain. Some medications used to treat these conditions can also contribute to the development of depression.
