Sibo Testing

What Is SIBO Breath Testing? Find SIBO Breath Testing in New York, NY

SIBO breath testing is a simple, non-invasive test that checks for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This test may be performed in-office or at home, so patients can find out if they have this disorder.

What Is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is a disorder that happens when an overgrowth or excess of bacteria commonly not found in the small intestine leads to the release of methane and hydrogen when you exhale. Both methane and hydrogen appear on a SIBO test, so your doctor can get a good idea of which bacteria have overgrown in the small intestine.

What Causes SIBO?

SIBO is caused by:

  • chronic constipation or motility issues

Previous gastrointestinal infection

Complications following abdominal surgery

  • Some medical conditions, such as diabetes, Crohn’s disease, or celiac disease
  • Structural issues around the small intestine, such as intestinal diverticulosis or adhesions

You may be at risk of this disorder if you have ever:

  • Injured your small intestine.
  • Had diverticulosis of the small intestine.
  • Had adhesions from surgery.
  • Had a fistula between two parts of the bowel.
  • Had diabetes.
  • Had a history of radiation therapy.
  • Had scleroderma, lymphoma, or Crohn’s disease.

This condition could lead to vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, kidney stones, and trouble absorbing protein, fats, and carbohydrates.

What Are the Symptoms of SIBO?

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth has uncomfortable symptoms, which is why patients head to see their medical providers. Some of the symptoms of SIBO disorder include:

  • Bloating

A loss of appetite

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Malnutrition
  • Abdominal pain
  • Feeling uncomfortably full after eating
  • fatigue / Brain fog

You need to consult a doctor if you are showing signs of SIBO. More severe symptoms that require immediate attention include:

  • Rapid, unintentional weight loss
  • Persistent diarrhea
  • Significant abdominal pain lasting longer than a couple of days.

If you develop severe pain, seek emergency care.

What Happens if the SIBO Test Comes Back Positive?

If the SIBO test comes back positive, then the clinical team works on a treatment plan. Usually, this includes:

  • Selecting botanical medications that may help correct the imbalance.
  • Discussing dietary changes that may address the imbalance.
  • Using antibiotics that target specific bacteria in the gut.

The goal of treatment is to help you find relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of SIBO.
