Sibo Testing

Good health starts with gut health: The value of SIBO testing (bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine)

A New York Center for Integrative Health, we see a lot of individuals from throughout the Westport and greater Fairfield County, Connecticut area with chronic digestive conditions. Furthermore, our director, Dr. Robert Kachko, has successfully treated thousands of patients with these conditions. He understands that the health of the whole body starts with the gut. Furthermore, effective resolution of symptoms to support digestive and holistic health begins with various diagnostic tools. Notably, we are providers of the SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) breath test.

SIBO explained

SIBO may be at the root of many common GI complaints, from nausea and bloating to abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea. As its name suggests, SIBO is characterized by an imbalance in the bacteria present in the small intestine. With SIBO, food may stagnate and harbor bacteria, resulting in the production of toxins, which can disrupt how our bodies absorb the nutrients in the food that we consume. After the bacteria digest food, the resulting byproducts can trigger symptoms such as bouts of diarrhea and loose stools.

Testing for SIBO

We can non-invasively evaluate the microbiome of your small intestine by performing a SIBO breath test. We will advise on how to prepare for the test, which can be conducted from the comfort and convenience of your home (with a take-home kit). To measure for excess bacteria, you will be asked to consume a sweet drink. A series of tubes are also provided. You will breathe into these at regular intervals. The idea is to pinpoint the hydrogen (or methane or hydrogen sulfide) that is exhaled after drinking as directed. If a rapid increase is noted, it can be indicative of SIBO. The excess bacteria are responsible for your body releasing hydrogen, methane, or hydrogen sulfide.
